Watershed isn’t’ too much of a fanny tickler. And I mean fanny in the British sense of the word. Unlike most romance books out there, Watershed is a sweet romance. It seems once 50 Shades topped the charts, it’s all about sex these days. I’m not knockin’ it for sure. Sometimes I pace ahead in a romance just to get to the good sex scenes! And many of my colleagues write hot romance, and I enjoy them just as much. I read a huge range of romance from YA/NA to BDSM, so not even necessarily partial to sweet versus saucy.
So why did I choose to write a sweet romance during a tidal rush of steamy books to the market?
There are two reasons, really.
I have to be honest and say the first one is my mum. Seriously. Because it was my first book, I knew my entire family and friends all over the world would read it. I couldn’t hold my mum back from the bookstore and from telling every one of her friends and every customer that visited our family business. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ashamed of romance – love is what makes the world go around – and I’m old enough to say the word sex in front of her now without cringing. But just barely. LOL. And your mum is – well, your mum.
The second and most important is that Watershed is the first book of the Love Where You Roam series. Stories about self-discovery and falling in love. A light-hearted read, Watershed revels in those “first days”. It’s about the butterflies, about the wonderment and confusion – it’s about looking forward to seeing that person, just seeing them, even if it is only for a few minutes. It’s about the sexual tension that builds so strongly between two people that it is almost painful. It’s that time of your life that rarely will be repeated (but can happen at any age!) – all the great emotion and buzz that resonate in your gut when you know something is building, something inescapable, something that will change your life.
I’m exploring this exact theme on my Sundae With Nuts blog where I host my fellow authors who answers sweet to steamy questions, but always questions about those “first days”. As my latest guest said: “It’s about having some fun and remembering your wild and crazy youth!”
So, even though Watershed won’t make you as horny as some other reads, I do hope it will leave you feeling happy, fulfilled, perhaps a soft sigh of awww may slip from your lips as you close the last page. Most of all, I do hope that it touches your heart.

I like reading sweet books. I read romance to see the discovery, the journey of two people fighting to find true love. Sometimes the hot and heavy sex scenes take too much of the center stage and, for me, detracts from the story. I love that you wrote a sweet love story.

I love this article. For me, when I started writing, it was my grandma–the sweetest, most wonderful woman in the world. I was in my early 30s when I started writing, and I had NEVER heard my grandma raise her voice, and until the year before this conversation, the only thing I had ever seen her read was her bible study. Then she discovered Nora Roberts, and it was ON. Seriously, my sisters and I would follow her around the book stores, removing books from her pile that were too steamy, only for her to snatch them right back up. So when I told her (in the car, mind you) that she was the reason I was blocked, because every time I started to write a sex scene, I kept imagining her reading it, her reaction blew my mind. She told me all I had to do was tell her where the sex scenes were…so she could read them first, because they were the best part. I almost hit a mailbox. And right now, I can proudly say she has the cover for The Dragon’s Heart pinned dead center of her refrigerator so everyone can see. Now, my mom, on the other hand, has been forbidden from reading any of my writing, EVER.
Now that I’ve babbled, I love that you remained true to the story and the characters and your convictions. Watershed sounds just wonderful.

I agree that it’s hard to stop Mom’s from sharing their child’s successes! I like a variety in my reading from horror to BDSM… there has to be choice. That’s why I love that people write sweet stories too! All the best!!

I’ll read anything from sweet to sensual to full-on steamy — it’s the characters that matter to me when I’m reading or writing. Some characters have a steamy voice and some don’t. Forcing a sweet character into a steamy role or vice versa just wouldn’t ring true. You can lead characters to sex scenes, but you can’t make them share. 😉

I love that you followed the promise of the story rather than force the issue of sex. I think each book should do that. If it’s one that’s hot & sexual, so be it. It should follow the natural progression of the story-line – whatever that may be.

knowing your mom is going to read them is a pretty big motivator! for me it’s my grandma. any sexiness stresses her out, haha. I adore sweet books. Don’t get me wrong, I like sexy books too, but i’m more attracted to the love story, not just steamy scenes. The emotional journey is so important for romance reads!

Nice post, Cd! I There is definitely something to be said for sweet romances and the build up of sexual tension in a novel. As a reader (and writer) I prefer sweet or sensual romances. It’s great there is such a variety in the romance genre to appeal to a wide range of readers.
Watershed was a fab read and I look forward to the other novels in the Love Where You Roam series!
